I remember quite a few occasions where I couldn't change things in
configure.in the right way, just because 2.59 didn't support it. But I
can only name two from the top of my head:

1) fix hard-coded calls to sed:

2) AC_PROG_GREP (finds a usable grep if available to fix issues with AIX
grep and friends)
