Okay, I'm a liar... the snmpd.conf file that I was using on the working machine was *not* the same as the one on the failing machine. How they got to be different, I don't know, but they were. When I put the "good" snmpd.conf in the correct location on the "bad" machine, it works fine. <sigh>
