You can use the existing MIBs, and implement as much or as little
as you need.

Actually, you need to learn about SMI.
It's based on ASN.1, but is a sort-of-subset.
It would be better to concentrate on SMI documentation,
rather than get confused or misled by the wider capabilities
of full ASN.1

The standard reference on SNMP MIBs and SMI is "Understanding
SNMP MIBs", by David Perkins and Evan McGinnis. It's getting
on a bit by now, but is still basically accurate. I can't think of
anything better.
