Can we bring this up at the next meeting to discuss it?  Or at least get
enough people here to say it's a good thing?  Say a vote of +3 or so?

I actually don't have a problem with it (I thought I would!).  The only
thing I'd be concerned about is if compilers spit out warnings for
people using old code.  This is one of the rare cases where backwards
compatibility might actually be better, not worse, with the patch in
place.  The only thing that would potentially break is a non 8-bit byte
machine, but since we don't support those anyway, who cares?
