Hello all,

I am aiming at integrating the NETLINK patch, submitted last
year, to the latest version of net-snmp, in the coming two months.
The purpose of this patch is to bring instant (relatively...)
notifications when an interface is brought down/up.

The patch works with a prior version of net-snmp but is
currently broken in the latest. We get response times within a
second of the event.

This patch was made by a collegue (Michael Leslie), so I have
direct access to info about its implementation.

I see that the topic of a NETLINK-based mechanism (and
specifically of that patch) was brought up recently in an IRC
session (dts12, hardaker - simple clusty.com search ...). I'm
glad that there's interest in it since I do see the benefit of
having an immediate response to such interface status changes as
opposed to periodic polling. From our perspective, users do want
to know about a router's interfaces status changes, quickly. The
quickest the better.

Now, I do not have an URL about follow-up comments to that
patch at the moment, but I recall having read that it was
somewhat mentioned that the place the mechanism was located was
not ideal, eg. DISMAN.

Before doing anything I would like to know the feedback of the
net-snmp coders community so that the functionality is optimally
better integrated to net-snmp and can survive many revisions :-)

So please, do not hesitate to comment. I will appreciate any
feedback. Perhaps it'd be possible to integrate immediate
responses of any kind from the NETLINK mechanism in a more
flexible framework that could cater to various needs. I surely
would like to see something along that way, if possible at all.

If there's already work being done regarding this, perhaps we
can work together.

Cheers,

Al
