Thank you VERY much for your response Lee !! You have no idea how much of a
headache all this has been giving me. Good Lord, I had no idea how much
complexity existed between the different networking components while
implementing SNMP !
A confession: The only book in my possession is "SNMP, SNMPv2, SNMPv3, and
RMON 1 and 2 (3rd Edition) by William Stallings". I have some background in
C & Linux, but nil / zilch with networking. Can you please suggest any good
networking books I could get to learn up these concepts?
To be honest, this part of your explanation is still making my head spin -
"The mac address of the layer-3 router ip address may or may not have
anything to do with a layer-2 port mac address." At least, from what I
remember in college, that information *should* be the same up/down the
stack.
In hindsight, it looks like I bit off a 'little' more than I could chew, but
I want to keep going all the same.
