What that translates to in the real world is it's much harder to understand for a specific case! The ifTable is a great example of "something that is simple and thus hard to understand fully". As an example, the goal of the table is to represent pretty much all the endpoints on a device, physical *or* logical. So I've heard that a correctly implemented table on a IPsec gateway box will actually have 1 entry for *each* IPsec tunnel in it (and then the ifStackTable will link them all together showing how one is a tunnel interface on top of another physical one).
