One more point: Many SNMP tables are designed to be generic so they can
incorporate every potential implementation model.  What that translates
to in the real world is it's much harder to understand for a specific
case!

The ifTable is a great example of "something that is simple and thus
hard to understand fully".  As an example, the goal of the table is to
represent pretty much all the endpoints on a device, physical *or*
logical.  So I've heard that a correctly implemented table on a IPsec
gateway box will actually have 1 entry for *each* IPsec tunnel in it
(and then the ifStackTable will link them all together showing how one
is a tunnel interface on top of another physical one).

Understanding SNMP MIBs by Perkins and McGinnis is the one we recommend
most if you want to get into truly understanding the MIB language.
