That's wrong. Try "--with-openssl=/usr" and make sure the
final configure report tells that DES is enabled.

Thanks for the help. It turned out that I didn't have openSSL correctly installed. I sorted that out and encryption is working fine.

For information: On a debian system you need --with-openssl="/usr/local/ssl"
