When I run the example-demon from the tutorial I get the following
message "Warning: Failed to connect to the agentx master agent
(/var/agentx/master): Unknown host (/var/agentx/master) (Connection
refused)"

The /var/agentx/master file exists, but it is 0 bytes.

A zero-length file is to be expected - it's a socket, not a regular file.
What is the ownership (and permissions) on this file?

The owner and group are both 'root'. The permissions are -rwxr-xr-x
What user are you running the example-demon as?

I'm running the example-demon as 'root'. (via the sudo command)
What happens when you close down the master agent - does the
/var/agentx/master socket disappear?

No, /var/agentx/master socket is still there when I close the master agent.
