I implemented a) as mentioned below and it works very well.  Now to configure 
the receiver to process the trap as sent and to generate the appropriate alarms.

Thank you for your assistance and a second set of 'eyes'.  

The requirement for a space between the boolean operator and the variable needs 
to find its way into the various manual pages and readmes quickly.
