According to the original poster, the problem actually relates to SunOS,
rather than Linux.

If you need to add /usr/local/lib to the library link path (on Linux),
then I'd be inclined to add this to /etc/ld.so.conf (either directly,
or via /etc/ld.so.conf.d)

  That way it's handled once and for all, and for all users, and doesn't
rely on setting environmental variables for each user that might want
to use the software.

But that's not really releavant to the original problem.
