So I'll have to correct myself and ask a followup question: Is there an OID tree for "personal" use like the 192.168.x.x addresses (RFC 1918)?

This is not true. The experimental tree is managed by IANA; see http://www.iana.org/assignments/smi-numbers/smi-numbers.xhtml#smi-numbers-22 .
