I think it comes from virtual idols in Japan, Date Kyoko, Kyoko Date, 1996 - we have the original multi-media disk, Love Communication. I wrote an article on her and virtual idols in general for an anthropological magazine around that time, I think it was Etnofoor - something like that - it was translated. It created a sense of unease re: the Japanese pop scene.
As a concept though maybe it goes all the way back to Capek's play R.U.R. or those 19th century images of steam engines as humanoid etc. and probably back father, I think there might have been references in ancient Greece?

It's uncanny because it may be machine or living tissue or both, and it can be an area of discomfort for people, someone not knowing who or what they're talking to or confronting. - Best Alan On Wed, 3 Apr 2024, Tina Laporta wrote: > Date: Wed, 3 Apr 2024 13:55:02 +0000 > From: Tina Laporta <ava...@tinalaporta.net> > Reply-To: NetBehaviour for networked distributed creativity > <netbehaviour@lists.netbehaviour.org> > To: "netbehaviour@lists.netbehaviour.org" > <netbehaviour@lists.netbehaviour.org> > Subject: [NetBehaviour] Uncanny valley > > > What is the uncanny valley and why is it a trap? > > > Sent from my iPhone > _______________________________________________ > NetBehaviour mailing list > NetBehaviour@lists.netbehaviour.org > https://lists.netbehaviour.org/mailman/listinfo/netbehaviour > > _______________________________________________ NetBehaviour mailing list NetBehaviour@lists.netbehaviour.org https://lists.netbehaviour.org/mailman/listinfo/netbehaviour _______________________________________________ NetBehaviour mailing list NetBehaviour@lists.netbehaviour.org https://lists.netbehaviour.org/mailman/listinfo/netbehaviour _______________________________________________ NetBehaviour mailing list NetBehaviour@lists.netbehaviour.org https://lists.netbehaviour.org/mailman/listinfo/netbehaviour On Apr 3, 2024, at 11:53?AM, Ana Vald?s via NetBehaviour <netbehaviour@lists.netbehaviour.org> wrote: Friends I am shamelessly going to use the list to pitch money and support for my latest book Gaza Blues. Maybe Gaza is going to be destroyed but let us writers artists and common people keep Gaza alive in books stories and exhibitions. I started a Go Fund page to make the book translated into English and Spanish. The book is already out in Swedish my second language. https://gofund.me/2abccf75 And please pitch in and share it! A part of the selling of the book is going directly to Gaza. <IMG_0276.jpg> cell Sweden +4670-3213370 cell Uruguay +598-99470758 "When once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been and there you will always long to return. ?
