Re: Siimon - when I was teaching at Florida International Uniersity, that hellhole, they had instituted a policy that each departmet had to pull its own weight financially - so busiess etc. had no problems, but painting? New Media? Well, they got rid of me and the new media line, that took care of that, but the rest of it was miserable - the department couldn't afford xerox paper at all, etc. Theater did ok by doing "popular" musicals so students learned very little, etc. etc. There has to be a way to have a _free_ humanities for both teachers and students - the so-called surplus economy that harbors art should also support it. I'm so sick of struggling myself! If I wasn't so obsessive/neurotic, I would have stopped a long time ago - a lot of people do, they go under, are swamped, not beccause of talent or desire, but an economy and ideology that basically hates any art outside of country-western and ballet.
