Hi Olga,

There are open source projects that can be installed on a server to run your own social network. To name some http://www.elgg.org, http://status.net/. There is also the http://www.mysociety.org/ though they seem not to support openid (http://openid.net/). This is in my eyes one of the critical aspects of good social networking software as this enables the free flow of information between competing? social networks. However, the most important thing is that a social network has to be actively used by many people. I think this is the real challenge for every alternative provider (and also the bills that have to be paid for server (maintenance) and data
transfer once it's used big time).

It's been a while that I'm looking for some sort of alternative to Facebook. I never liked the idea of signing up to Facebook but I started to feel a bit jealous of its advantages. I recently heard about this Spanish open platform
N-1: https://n-1.cc/

I'd be interested in hearing from other platforms like this.. Does anyone know
about any??
