There's work going on on a free-as-in-freedom social networking system
from the GNU project at the moment -

http://groups.fsf.org/wiki/Group:GNU_Social

it's early days so getting involved now can really help shape the project.

When I mentioned the idea at Make Art last year it was something that
people were really excited by, which surprised me as it was only a small
part of the talk.

To answer MANIK's question, people are starting to really understand the
problems with Facebook holding your personal data and being able to change
how much of it is made public whenever Facebook like. People want to take
back control of their online social presence. So they need alternatives to
Facebook, and they need alternatives that won't be just as bad if they
become just as successful. This means Free Software projects. ;-)
