i've never managed to get access to an access grid (even when studying
at a university that had one ... ) - i've only once participated in an
event that used it (electrosmog) & it meant that the conference was only
accessible to people who also had access grid access. so it's not much
good if you want something that's publicly accessible.
we will find out if we can put annie's interface on the UpStage server &
see whether it will work for this sort of thing.

An open source option for this is big blue button. If you're able to
set it up using their vm image, its pretty smooth and simple but if
you have to set it up on an existing server it can be a bit
complicated. It uses the red5 server that was mentioned earlier.

Hi Roger,
You need a multicast video conference software such as
www.accessgrid.org <http://www.accessgrid.org> supported in the UK
by www.ja.net/services/video/agsc/AGSCHome/
<http://www.ja.net/services/video/agsc/AGSCHome/>
It's basically an Education Network tool, I used it before years
ago for a project called Streaming Tales when we had a live dinner
debate between two Somali community based in UK and USA. When I
was working at The Public in the Midland I was lobbying for
opening up the access grid network to art institutions and artists
for experimentation. If you are based in a University in Sidney,
check the science faculty, they may have an access grid set up.
Usually science departments are the main users of access grid
worldwide.

it would be really interesting to try this! please send it to
me off-list - i don't know whether we can put it onto the
UpStage server (because of the various other things running on
it) but i will find out, & if not we can find somewhere else
to try it.

ps "My" interface for my web performances could do this - it
would have to be adapted a bit.
It is made with a red5 installed on the servers of x-resaux
and uses a flashplayer.
Estelle Senay of x-resaux who made it for me will give the
code to anyone who would like to install the soft on their
own servers.

This is a very good idea - we, you, me, they could start
distant reading clubs, watching events, discussions etc.
Please do develop that Helen, great.

hi roger,
i've been looking into ways to stream a recording
(audio visual) with
both text & an audio-visual chat options alongside it
- we have been
thinking about something like this for having
"screenings" of UpStage
show recordings, where the artists can talk about the
work & people can
ask questions etc as everyone is watching the
recording together.
so far i haven't found a good solution for it - i've
experimented with
some cobbled-together interfaces using various
streaming & chatting
tools, but nothing has worked well enough yet to
actually try it out. it
is something that we may build into the new UpStage
that we're working on.
let's talk more about it & see what we can come up
with :)
