Thanks James and Rob for having this conversation here.

Especially for two things

1) "about to Godwin" (excellent verbing of a proper noun- like it) took me here. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Godwin%27s_law
Going to use that a lot now.
That's two Godwins to be grateful for now.

2) great disambiguation
"more platonism. The idea that "the work" is information independent from its substrate and that we are buying that substrate-independent form. It's a bit Cartesian and a bit Shannon and a bit idealistic."

Thanks chaps!

The more people write, the more votes they'll see in it.
What struck my mind was the possibility they'll see a greater need for
this kind of behaviour (fair use copying/parody/etc) to be criminalized.
Oh there'd really be no need for further legislation to do that. :-)

and why the hell shouldn't I pay.
Because you already bought it?
Yes, in a format for a particular device type. If I want to listen to
it using other devices... Ah yes, there's a vague memory of the
argument here... it's all digital... or am I straying into
relativism? hmmm I honestly don't know anything other than I probably
shouldn't try to argue unpopular points of view with people on the
internet.
IMO it's more platonism. The idea that "the work" is information
independent from its substrate and that we are buying that
substrate-independent form. It's a bit Cartesian and a bit Shannon and a
bit idealistic.
