It's the same in the US, especially in the gallery system. And it's unbelievably wide-spread; the first time I was turned down for a job because of age was when I was 30! (It was for the editorship of the LAICA Journal.) Faculty committees always have a way to find out how old you are without asking directly, which is illegal. And I know of two jobs, maybe 10-15 years ago, where I was a finalist but lost because of age (I know this because I had friends on the committees).

The result isn't only obviously loss of income; it's also loss of self- esteem - one ends up feeling hopeless, dreck.
