Hi Alan,
Well I think it's disgusting & reflects a shallow-capitalist culture
more interested in economics than quality or experience. And those
supporting such institutionally driven, processes of 'age cleansing'
from our culture should be ashamed of themselves.
It is political, and creates a generational shift where younger people
also facing a bad future under the gaze of privatization and neo-liberal
control, are more likely to work under terrible conditions but also conform.
The best working conditions is always when people are allowed to be
engaged with diverse experiences, when various ideas and different
social backgrounds (class, race & gender) and social contexts, make up a
rich cultural mix.
Wishing you well.
marc
It's the same in the US, especially in the gallery system. And it's
unbelievably wide-spread; the first time I was turned down for a job
because of age was when I was 30! (It was for the editorship of the
LAICA Journal.) Faculty committees always have a way to find out how
old you are without asking directly, which is illegal. And I know of
two jobs, maybe 10-15 years ago, where I was a finalist but lost
because of age (I know this because I had friends on the committees).
The result isn't only obviously loss of income; it's also loss of
self- esteem - one ends up feeling hopeless, dreck.
- Alan
