I've had the complete opposite feeling lately, now that I have graphical acceleration on a very recent nVidia card (GTX 770), using USB3 ports, etc. I usually build NetBSD with build.sh, most people probably do, so I'm not too familiar with the troubles encountered by avoiding it, sorry.
