So if someone had your dialup password they could do all of the
above. If they had your email password they could read your private
mail.
It would be totally trivial to write a script that read a list of
logon/password pairs, connected to each mailbox, downloaded the mail
(leaving it on the server so you didn't know anything was wrong) and
then scanned the downloaded file for key phrases, like passwords,
credit card numbers etc.
