well I've had a CD-ROM on my untowered A1200 for approx' 5-6 years

you should be able to say get a 4xspeed scsi CD-ROM external for next to
nothing nowadays, you could use it with a cheap squirrel scsi interface or
use it with a surf squirrel scsi (so get the fast serial port) look in the
second hand stuff. The CD-ROM should be dead easy to get second hand cheap.

If you get say Amiga Format you will have a CD to use every month so you will
use it honest.

you will be sorry not to get one as your only limiting yourself to how you use
your Amiga. There is so much on CD-ROM and you can use a lot of PC stuff as
well don't just think its only Amiga disks.
If you live near me I'll show you using my CD-ROM (what part of the country
are you from?)
Cheers all the best
