I /think/ he's actually talking about something like 'HearMe' which is
like 'Speach IRC' I have a 'friend' who bangs on and on and on about
this 'HearMe.com' being great and how I can't use it, I tell him I
don't want to waste that kind of bandwidth (that confuses him) even
though I'd love to. :)

The iPhone idea i know does work on the PointlessContraption because
my cousin in Oz phoned us before we were on the net (ie to our
landline phone) and it was a local call from her PC at work using
software that would dial our number through the net and she spoke
using the mic/speaker attached to the modem - it does exist - I would
like to see an Amiga version too.
