1) You can get the later parts of a thread before the earlier parts due to
the way
they're propagated round the Usenet servers
2) Some servers don't hold posts very long, some just get lost.
3) As 2
4) You should be able to change to any newserver you want within Microdot
but I
don't know how offhand as I don't use it for news - it'll be in the
preferences
somewhere (also being at work at the moment I can't look).

A lot of providers work on the basis that high traffic groups have a lower
retention
period then a low traffic group, the "dodgy" groups having the lowest
retention of
all. To get it in perspective, just think about how many groups there are
and how
much data there could well be. Demon has a complete news thread, when they
ran
multiple news bases and one went down it could take several days to resync
it.

        Hello,

I wonder if anyone else has the following problem with newsgroups.

        1) Sometimes the response to a message turns up before the original
message
           (sometimes 24 hours after!)
        2) In a thread, sometimes I see the responses from one person, but
not
another person. (As they quote the other persons post, I can
still follow
the posts, but it is kind of strange.)
        3) Sometimes, when someone posts a series of posts, I don't get them
all.
        4) Often, messages are only held on the server for a couple of
hours, making
it impossible to get them all (unless you're lucky enough to live
in the US, where you have free local calls and can stay online
24/7.)

I guess my news server is a bit crap. Is it possible to select a
different
news server anywhere in the Microdot preferences (I have looked!),
or am I
at the whim of my Internet Provider?

        Daniel
