Going slightly OT.
If validation annoys you (especially on large drives) then consider
changing to PFS3. I have never had any problems since changing over
to this filesystem. Its faster and much more damage resistant than
FFS is.
I wouldn't consider going back to FFS on any harddrive now even if you
offered to pay me to.
