I know this is a bit of a silly suggestion and a long shot but have
you got your wife's email set to delete mail at the server. If not
then you will find that you have download that email already it is
just waiting to be deleted.... I did say it was a long shot ;0)
Other than that I wouldn't have a clue, sorry
