Someone else can answer this since I did it with Linux.

Yes, it's really free - assuming you're *not* an NTL cable customer you have to
spend 10 quid a month on phone calls using the NTL indirect telephone service,
but the actual internet dialup is an 0800 umber (I'm on it now)

Yes. It's annoying but you get used to it.

The bandwidth is exceptionally good, yes - I've been VERY impressed. There's
definitely no bottleneck at NTL - if you're on a good site you can download at
the ax speed of your modem (I have a SupraExpress 56e Pro and I see >5k/sec
regularly on binaries, up to 10k/sec with plain text).

The only problems they've had are a few routing problems - apparently (this is
a third hand explanation) a central router went down and the backup couldn't
cope with the demand at peak times (meaning often you connected but couldn't
log in, or got intermittent or no routing after logging in).

In over 2 months I've hardly had a single engaged tone.

You mean the phone calls? I dunno, work it out: 3p/2p/1p per min
(day/eve/weekend). It's simple at least! BT bills these days are
incomprehensible what with all the discount schemes and promotions. It's
absolutely appalling, I think everyone should stop using BT on principle!
