Thanks for the surfing lesson. I will see if I can get my pal on the net.
In spite of track cutting and pin linking, I could not get the A500 to boot
with the Kickstart 3.1 ROM. It just froze before the disk animation
appeared.

You need Kickstart 3.1 before you can install Workbench 3.1 or higher.
