There is another advantage if you use a mainframe as a super-server like we
do here. You
reduce the amount of traffic on your LAN if you use stored procedures.
This is a major
advantage at our establishment. We use DB2 through an ODBC gateway.
Response time
increased when we moved to stored procedures. This would probably hold
true with a server
class machine also.

Subject: Re: [ND] Using Stored procedures for transaction management
Advantages of Stored procedures compared ND built-in Insert/Delete as I
observe:
1. More flexibility in error handling: You can catch the DBMS defined
exceptions while inserting/deleting and show more detailed and user
friendly
messages when error occurs.
2. More flexibility in implementing business logic in back end: Even though
it is simple and eases maintenance to use built-in's, it may not be of much
use when you want to implement more business logic while
inserting/modifying. Sometimes it's not possible to implement whole logic
in
front end code.
3. Not much dependence on ND
4. Employing DBMS features effectively if you are an advanced DBMS
programmer

Subject: [ND] Using Stored procedures for transaction management
I'm not used to using stored procedures but recently I was looking over
some
one's ND4 code (for an app that talks to Informix 7) and I noticed that
stored
procedures were used whenever a series of INSERT/DELETEs needed to be
executed
as a transaction. That looked like a smart coding technique to me, and I'd
like
to get other opinions.
Do you recommend using SPs like that? Pros/cons?
Thanks!
Janet
