My understanding from Sun (based on a meeting last week) matches what Curt
reported RE: "purchasing" iPlanet.

Further, my understanding is that:

* ND v5.02 will be released on Jan 24, 2000 and will be the last version of
ND, except for bug fixes (service packs); it will support "production"
releases of EJB, JSP, Servlets, and "Java 2" (ND v5.01 currently supports
only "development" releases of JSP and Servlets, though production releases
of EJB and Java 2 (a.k.a. JDK v1.2))

* iPlanet v6.0 will be beta released in Jan 2000 and made GA in Mar 2000;
it will support ND v5.02 (as well as final versions of Kiva/Netscape); IT
shops may elect to run both iPlanet and ND (or Kiva/Netscape) concurrently,
but even if wanting to run "just ND", some parts of iPlanet will still be
required; iPlanet will be available on NT and Solaris initially (no
reference to HP-UX or AIX) and the IDE (studio) will require resources no
greater than what is currently required (at least with respect to the 256Mb
RAM required for ND v5) and may even require less (we'll see)

* iPlanet v6.5 (or whatever next major release is numbered) is targetted
for GA in Fall 2000

* ND official support will end Dec 31 2002 (didn't hear reference to end
date for Kiva/Netscape or Forte beyond statement that their support will
end, too); of the 3 existing app servers, iPlanet will build most from (but
not solely) from Kiva/Netscape

* migration tools will be made available hopefully by March 2000, but Sun
should have a better schedule planned by mid-December 1999; migration
strategy is basically to either: 1) convert pre-ND v5.02 apps to ND v5.02
"as is" or 2) convert pre-ND v5.02 apps to ND v5.02 but also utilizing (to
whatever degree possible) EJBs; 1st approach is faster short-term and 2nd
approach is better long-term as it will lessen efforts for eventual
migration to iPlanet

* licensing for iPlanet will be CPU-based rather than concurrent user
based; conversion from existing licenses will be based on a basic formula
of 100 users = 1 CPU (will round-up, too, e.g., 101 users = 2 CPU licenses,
etc.)

* IDE for iPlanet will build mostly from Forte's SynerJ tool, though I read
about something with some other tools in a recent ComputerWorld (maybe from
last week's issue)

* Sun also recently bought Net Beans (Czech company) that (overly
simplified) makes EJBs; this is part of Sun's product direction to rely on
java standards
