Hi people, I am planning release 1.1.9 of the iptables tutorial for tonight, and I hope to get it out on time this round. It does seem like our overzelous site maintainer is blocking all trafic except port 80, and hence it gets a bit rough to do updates for now. (ie, I need to call him and make him open up for ssh so I may scp the files to the server). However, as long as we are not maintaining any huge site, this is good since we will have less services to worry about as long. Boingworld is pretty much at a stand still right now, however, I am currently trying my best to get this tutorial to a state where I am at least not ashamed to leave it for a while.
For this version I have worked extremely much on fixing all the scripts to conform to the "stylesheet" I discussed in the previous mail, and I have also gotten all of them to conform. However, the hardest work has been put to working and fixing with the DSSSL stylesheets. Ie, I got it back to the original look after 2 weeks or so, with a few small modifications and all I need to find out how to do now, is to fix the spacing between double hyphens (ie, --). I had hoped there would be a way to do this by specifying some variable like %character-spacing%, but I have looked to no avail it seems so far. All stylesheet changes are done within a customization layer. The PS and PDF versions of the tutorial now contains graphical admonitions, thanks to the stylesheet changes etcetera, however they look horrid for the time being, but will be fixed for the next version of it. Also, I have started working through the rc.firewall.txt explanation, which should be a bit better looking by now. After spending some time trying to update it to reflect the reality of the script, i finally decided to more or less start all over with the whole chapter, and I just hope I made the right decision. I hope to have this project stabilized within a month or two and do not plan to make any huge changes in it until kernel 2.6 and "iptables2" is released. After that, I will jump on to other projects like the ipsysctl tutorial I have already begun.
