There are many of us who would like to see the list close up a bit.  I 
think a good solution to this would be to install a good spam filter, 
such as SpamAssassin (www.spamassassin.org) on the list server.  It 
would dump the spam message into a bit bucket before they reached the 
list, which could therefore remain "open" while still getting rid of the 
p0rn and other unwelcome solicitiations.  I run two Mailman lists on one 
of my servers and have installed this utility on it.  It's very 
configurable and so far seems to be pretty well "on-point" in 
distinguishing spam from valid messages.
