Based on the documentation, this seems to be a bug in the implementation of the Chooser.
The documentation distinguishes between the display name and the variable name (as one would hope): https://github.com/NetLogo/NetLogo/wiki/Widget-Format The GUI dialog does not allow separate setting of the display name. (It should.)
