I lack technical background but here is a thought :

Trust is something the end-user must end up doing at some point. But if
the end-user starts doubting her counterpart she could start harrassing
him with questions to determine how reliable he is.
As her confidence decreases her requests increases. So instead of
harrassing every one because she can't trust anyone, a node could
regularly decide her level of harrasment. As she determines which nodes
are safer and which ones not to use, she decreases her level of
harrasment...
