Subject: Problems That Continue To Exist In Net-Tamer (beta 1.12 of 3-27-2000)

CC to David Colston

What follows is for the benefit of David Colston and for readers of
the Net-Tamer list group at [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

The latest Net-Tamer (beta released on 3-27-2000) is unable to display
webpages at CNN.COM. Net-Tamer will download but will not completely
parse pages at CNN.COM. At no time does Net-Tamer display such
webpages. Net-Tamer variously reports error 52, error 55, and error 75
to NT.ERR whenever an attempt is made to view webpages at CNN.COM.
These results have been consistently reproduced on a PENTIUM II system
and on an 80286 system using EMU386S.EXE to emulate an 80386
environment. This problem also exists in the current release version
of Net-Tamer (version 1.11.2) in regard to the 386, XT/286, and the
palmtop implementation of this software. Version 1.10 of Net-tamer for
XT/286 systems will successfully download and display webpages from
CNN.COM along with other versions going back to version 1.08. However,
the 386 implementation of versions 1.10 will suffer the same fate as
does version 1.11.2 and beta version 1.12 (distribution archive dated
3-27=2000)

No matter how color blink is toggled in terminal setup, blinking
continues on a system equipped with an old but true CGA. Text and/or
banner colors in some areas of the reader software flash as well -- no
matter how one configures NTUSER.DEF in regard to terminal colors and
their intensity. Specifically, the red, green, and yellow bars
under the banner presented as one first brings up the reader software
continuously blink.

When downloading individual graphics (i.e. individual .JPG files) from
a webpage, Net-Tamer often does not download the graphic alone to a
target filename. At the top, one often finds text data from the server
which sent the graphics file, ala:

> HTTP/1.1 200 OK
> Date: Mon, 22 May 2000 16:45:52 GMT
> Server: Apache/1.3.6 (Unix) PHP/3.0.9
> Last-Modified: Mon, 22 May 2000 16:44:52 GMT
> ETag: "23005-ff24-39296404"
> Accept-Ranges: bytes
> Content-Length: 65316
> Content-Type: image/jpeg

Thus, one must edit the file to remove the above text with a binary
editor before viewing the file with most appropriate graphical file
viewers. This problem defeats even Net-Tamer's graphics viewer,
G&S.EXE.

Previously, I've reported that Net-Tamer, in its Graphics mode, will
not successfully decompress .JPG files so that G&S.EXE may reproduce
them on-screen. In tests I've conducted on a Windows 98 machine with
the latest beta of Net-Tamer -- both as an application executed in a
DOS Box or in MS-DOS Mode outside of Windows -- I've been unable to
get Net-Tamer to display .JPG files either individually or as
collective elements of a graphical webpage. GIF files are reproduced
to the screen without error. Perhaps this might have something to do
with the previously described problem. But, what would explain why
.GIF files are properly displayed after download while .JPG files are
not? No one here has confirmed the problem. Accordingly, I have to
assume the problem may be specific to my hardware and software setup
in some way that I cannot fathom. I've decided to withdraw this item
as an observation of a longstanding bug and/or a bug separate from
what is addressed in the item immediately above while I'm not yet
entirely convinced it is not a bug in Net-Tamer. The DJPEG.EXE used in
tests, by the way, has always been the 05-08.97 compile or
date/timestamp of that software.
