Subject: Re: Accessing www.fullcompass.com, anyone help?
The problem of Net-Tamer downloading a webpage, starting to parse the
page, and then aborting to the F2 = Online Options prompt is a growing
problem that reflects new methods of coding webpages which newer
versions of Net-Tamer will not handle. But more than the problem
indicated here, there is an associated problem of which users should
take note. Check NT.ERR after an attempt to view a webpage results in
the problem indicated above and quoted below. If an error 75 is listed
in NT.ERR, it's imperative that you run CHKDSK or another similar DOS
utility program to restore lost clusters. It's not necessarily true
that every occurrence of an error 75 will cause lost clusters.
However, often enough, when an error 75 occurs, Net-Tamer seems to
break or lose some file clusters.
CNN's webpages are an example of the problem noted above and quoted
below. In fact, it's not possible to obtain the raw HTML from a CNN
webpage by other means and view same with ALT-R from the Net-Tamer
screen that presents the date, time, amount of DOS memory, and etc.
Any attempt to read a raw HTML file representing the content of a CNN
webpage will fail in the same manner as if one had attempted to view
that page while online. Fortunately, some older versions of Net-Tamer
will successfully parse HTML from some of the webpages that make
version 1.11's HTML viewer crash. In terms of XTs, version 1.08 and
1.10 seem best suited to avoidance of this problem. However, these
versions have their own problems and limitations. For example, neither
can successfully gain access to a webpage offered up by a web server
in an HTTP 1.1 protocol. Many webpages are now offered up only via
HTTP 1.1 these days, and only versions 1.11+ and 1.12 beta of
Net-Tamer can handle those pages. I can't recall if HTTP 1.1
capability was implemented in version 1.11 or 1.11.1 of Net-Tamer. Thus,
my comments as to HTTP 1.1 may apply only to version 1.11.1 and 1.11.2
as well as the 1.12 betas. In any case involving the latest software,
though, and short of David Colston finding and implementing some way
around this aborted parsing problem in version 1.12 of Net-Tamer,
there's nothing from within version 1.11+ that anyone can do to make
Net-Tamer view webpages that cause the sort of crash noted above and
quoted below.
NOTE: version 1.10 (for XTs) may still be obtained from David
Colston's old website at
http://people.delphi.com/davidcolston/index.html
However, some may experience difficulty in performing a successful
download. In fact, for some, it may be necessary to run PKZIPFIX.EXE
against the ZIP file later to recover most of or at least some of the
files in the archive. Using other web browsers such as INTERNET
Explorer or Netscape will circumvent the download problem. In
addition, I've found it possible to do successful downloads from this
page using, of all things, version 1.08 of Net-Tamer. Finally, it
should be noted that the 386 implementation of version 1.10 suffers
the same parsing problem as the newest versions of Net-Tamer -- at
least for me. Only the *XT* implementation of 1.10 avoids the problem.
