I know this.
I have seen it on my old US Robotics Courier HST. What you get are
really U's with a "comma" on the right side down...
It was caused by a wrong configuration of modem, I don't remember
what, but there is some S register, that is seted up wrong.
First try AT&F command hardware reset of modem, if it not helps, than
you have to rewrite all registers as they are in manual. For a AT&F
command use some terminal program.
