Constant & Heimo:

The refrences I gave last time did have register settings. Agreed they
are large file size (over 1MB on one and close to 1.8MB on the others)
and they used the proprietary Adobe .PDF file format.

However, that is the present state-of-the-art for manufacturer's
documentation. Whether someone likes the approach or not for their own
personal reasons is a "none player" as far as the computer component
manufacturer is concerned. They can "publish" using a single file format
and know that anyone who uses an Adobe viewer will get a consistent
display presentation plus it will print to laser - ink-jet - dry-ink -
and some dot-matrix printers with the same scale and page formating.

So If I was a mfg. and looking at serving the maximium number of users
with a single data presentation I would say - "take it or leave it this
is all your gonna get from us".

Subject: US Robotics Command Set

Constant:

Take a look at
<http://consumer.3com.com/voice/manual/index.html>
This one gives you the US Robotics manuals for the 56K series of modems.
They are in three formats "online" - "MS-Word" - "Adobe .PDF"
These files are large 1.6 Mb to over 2 MB.

Another one to look at is
<http://www.citilink.com/~kae/clink_faq/connecting/general/hayes.html>
this gives an overview of the standard Hayes command structure.

Heimo is correct that you need to use "at" = because it tells the modem
that modem commands follow. This must begin each line of commands.

I found the 3COM US Robotics web site to be a royal pain in the sitting
area. They are focused on the "latest-and-greatest" rather than
supporting any of their older "slow speed" telephone modems. Also their
web site has all the latest "junk" stuff to make it only usable with the
latest web browser. Plus there is no way to by-pass all their "whistles
and bells" and go to a straight text mode option...

You can look at <http://www.driverforum.com/modem/> which is a Modem/Fax
board discussion list. They have updated drivers for your unit and most
others too.

Best of luck,

John Oram

Subject: another US Robotics modem info site

Constant:

Have a look at Jeff Liebermann <http://www.LearnByDestroying.com>
and he has some additional information n the USR 56k modems
<http://www.cruzio.com/~jeffl/aty11/aty11.htm>

Best of luck,
