Yesterday's issue of BusinessLine carried a news item regarding tie up
between BSNL and HCL for offering computers with Broadband connection
to Rural customers. The computers are preloaded with Microsoft
software. It will be cheaper for BSNL to provide PCs loaded with
Linux complete with all useful software than offering stripped down MS
Software. This is a subsidised offering and is part-funded by public
money. Should Government funds be wasted for procuring proprietary
software when cheaper and better alternatives are available???
