Well put and I agree with the content 100% but the reality of life is that, especially in the biz world, you have to work with "de-facto" non-standard stuff especially the MS Office suite. Most times it is not an easy case of rejecting the document from a well paying client as you have blogged. It will happen over a period of time - case in point State of Massachusetts, US adopted ODF as the format for all state govt. documents; which in turn forced MS to provide ODF filters such that they could do business with the State. I believe if govt. and public administrative bodies start adopting such initiative, then the proprietary vendors will have no choice but to support open standards. Even on the office suite front, with cloud computing, MS is slowly loosing it's grip in the segment with Google Docs and the likes of Zoho.
