My perspectives as manager

On general basis, No one care about  the well being and happiness or
you or your family and what they care about is money you can generate.

Ratings are not related to your effort, as lot of us want to be. They
are done on comparative basis. There is no proper yardstick to perform
comparison and hence the yardstick used by management is the money
that I can generate from a person, how commited he is (working long
hours is considered hardworkign and committed. As a manager, one is
expected  to

1. Map the team members in bell curve. What this means, there should
be some high ratings, some medium ratings and some low ratings in the
team. As manager if it is not done, you need to make answers.
2. Salary of people is based on available budget. The budget is based
on the revenue the team can generate. or the pipeline some one can
forecast.  if we do very high end work, but the money is less.  we
cannot have large members of our team with high ratings. As high
ratings would imply high salaries
3. Some times within the budget, the manager needs to keep every one
happy. so he gives low rating and promotes some one and gives high
rating and give them a good hike. See both persons worked well but
manager has to share what he has, after assigning himself money.

Subject: [itec_bangalore] manager changes rating to lower side inspite
of extracting lot of work

hi

i am also currently facing an issue. in spite of extracting a lot of
work this year. the manager has changed my rating to the lower side.
its not a grave danger situation. i might be able to move to another
project within the company. my friends in other companies will help
me. however my current situation is affected. though the market seems
better and it might be the right time for a move.

but am at the mercy of the market. in spite of sincere work .

i talked to the second line manger , he told me that your brother
expired this year and you were not performing to your best. but never
mind we will take care next time. i told him there  is some  bias in
this case . he said yes , maybe there is some miscommunication. but
the matter ended at that. maybe i will be taken care of maybe not.

my situation is better. there is another friend. he has fixed his
marriage in 6 months. the management has marked him as an low
performer. he cant get better projects. he cant move out to another
project within the company. he cant change his domain after 10 years.
he is thinking of going to teaching. all responsibility is on him. not
with the company who hired him, who didnt give him adequate training ,
who wants to get rid of him and move on. he is working till 11 in the
night the managers want more and still mark him low.

the regular bottom 10-25 - will always face this. these managers  say
that this churn is good for the company. but what about people, their
families, their children. are companies delivering their
responsibilities in this regard - is there a method to all this ?

is there any framework for calculating quantum of work, rules to fire,
rules to layoff or is it just arbitrary...keep your mngr happy ?

i am trying to move to another project/company like every other i.t employee.

i am sure many of you did similar things. somebody a friend of mine
recently moved from a company from which he got unduly laid off , to a
better job.  market seems the only arbitrator in the current
scenario.

if the market is bad, not rights no justice is the framework.  but
people have families and life irrespective of market.

as an employee what is a recourse i have in this situation.
