Dear Krishnakant,
Thanks for your encouraging mail. Greetings to Prof. Shitole.
In 2007, I was at IIT Kanpur as part of BOS(CS,IT &MCA) of UPTU and we
shifted CS,IT final year labs to 100% FOSS. That syllabus was active
till 2011 but still they have not changed the syllabus of labs. I hope
the vigilant institutes followed our course instructions.
I was HOD-IT of my college and my faculty members showed the maximum
resistance when I tried to replace their Turbo C++ with gcc. I felt
the difference between de jure and de facto.
5 years later, I have a chairman who wants maximum possible removal of
non-FOSS. We have the standard labs which every college has. As you
suggested, I'll surely select PostgreSQL and netbeans for respective
labs. Can we replace Rational Rose with something FOSS? We tried
doxygen long back in 2009. No comments on that experience :)
