The continuing presence of social networking alternatives to behemoth
Facebook is examined. Among other things, smartphones and their 'service
channel' apps like Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram etc are seen to occupy a
major chunk of individual internet time. Access through smartphones is
understandably an excellent way to have users regularly checking the
service.

I didn't see a single free software 'application' mentioned, and this may
be a pointer to their lack of penetration. To my mind, a certain critical
mass of users is necessary, to ensure that infrastructure maintenance is
supported.

The other thing necessary is individual protection. In most cases, diaspora
implementations will have a decent wrapping of protection built in, so care
must be taken not to weaken, if anything, to strengthen it.
