Yes! That was one of the questions Jim brought up during the Clearview
design review, and that's generally the direction in which we'd go to
introduce new types of tunneling over IP.
One nit here is that GRE can run over lots of things and is embedded
in things that don't look exactly like manually configured tunnels
(e.g. L2TP sessions).
I'm not sure how GRE is used with Cisco's proprietary web caching
stuff. It's on the list of things to be looked at someday ...
Perhaps GRE then deserves to be a first-class object in the dladm
universe... That doesn't change much to me. If GRE is so different
from IP-in-IP tunneling that it doesn't make sense to implement within
the iptun driver, then that's ok. It can still fit in with the MAC-Type
plugin architecture, and a GRE driver would need to be written. That's
not a problem.
