I am interesting in knowing what folks think about the idea of exploring router appliances using Solaris (akin to the now-defunct Linux Router Project). I am also interested in knowing of other problems we can work on to make Solaris an even better candidate operating system for routing purposes.

A key candidate for roles such as this is being able to build a targetted, stripped down version of Solaris. This may require getting rid of drivers for SCSI controllers, RAID controllers, building a version of libc that has only the required functions, shipping only one of libxnet/libsocket+libnsl, etc. You get the idea.

In short, how do you make a Solaris that installs into 64MB (or less, for a compact flash card) that can serve web pages for configuring networking, etc?

In short, a lot of the problems and things that require doing are just as much to do with packaging and building of Solaris than the actual functionality provided by the kernel.
