I wonder whether dlpi_strerror would help the user understand what is wrong or whether it would add confusion.
dlpi_strerror would be a strerror, or an error description of error codes from dlpi.h or libdlpi.h.

Probably pointing out that it is dlpi error would give the user an idea:

!                                     dlpi_strerror(err));
