I'm having the same symptoms. Samba is useless but NFS works better.
I was supposed to attach an image, but for some reason I'm not allowed to.
So you can find it here http://hsorbo.no/files/stat.jpg. This is from a network
monitor on a client machine showing the traffic unfer an NFS-file transfer. As
you can see, it periodically drops to zero. I'm also using a Realtek-based NIC.
