Does nslookup work?  If it does, then /etc/resolv.conf is correctly
configured and the problem is elsewhere.

If nslookup does not work, then one of the following is amiss:

  - The addresses in /etc/resolv.conf aren't usable DNS servers.

  - The routes needed to reach those addresses are missing or
    incorrect.

  - The interfaces over which those routes point are broken, or some
    downstream router is malfunctioning.
