<p>
Did we agree to start somewhere and then grow the project over time?
</p><p>
Clarification: I would not say this project arose from Sun internal
discussions. I am a Sun employee and I have been pestering Sun engineers about
this documentation, but my pestering arose from reading OpenSolaris forums. On
June 14, 2007, an OpenSolaris user asked on this forum, "How is the status of
GLDV3? I want to upgrade my driver to GLDV3. I am wondering if it is close to
opening to public?" This has never been responded to. Other questions about
GLDv3 have been asked on this forum and on the device drivers forum. This
proposed project is to begin to fill that gap in community knowledge.
</p><p>
Another piece of this project: I definitely do not want to see this project
ended after a GLDv3 porting guide is delivered. In addition to other
suggestions made in this thread, I see a need to update the network drivers
chapter of the <i>Writing Device Drivers</i> book. I put <a
href="http://wikis.sun.com/display/WDD/GLD";>that chapter</a> on a <a
href="http://wikis.sun.com/display/WDD/Home";>WDD wiki space</a> to encourage
people to dive in. If people would rather work in an OpenSolaris repository -
great! Let's do it.
</p><p>
I enthusiastically endorse: "future projects that deliver APIs into Solaris
Networking can be considered incomplete without a deliverable that includes a
submission into this archive."</p>
